Each capsule of ULCUSAN – 200 contains 200 mg of cimetidine.
Each capsule of ULCUSAN – 400 contains 400 mg of cimetidine.
Cimetidine is a competitive antagonist of histamine at histamine H2 – receptors of the parietal cells and this effectively inhibits
gastric acid secretion.
Cimetidine inhibits both daytime and nocturnal basal gastric acid secretion.
Cimetidine is rapidly absorbed after oral administration and peak levels occur in 45 – 90 minutes.
The half life is approximately 2 hours. Cimetidine is eliminated mainly by urinary excretion .
Treatment of active duodenal ulcer.
Pathological hypersecretory conditions, eg Zollinger – Ellison syndrome.
Prophylaxis of recurrent duodenal ulcer.
There are no known contraindications to the use of cimetidine.
Active duodenal ulcer :
Adults : 200 mg, three times daily with meals and 400 mg at bedtime, for 6 – 8 weeks, or 400 mg twice daily.
Prophylaxis of recurrent duodenal ulcer :
Adults : 400 mg at bedtime
Pathological hypersecretory conditions :
Adults : 200 mg three times daily with meals and 400 mg at bedtime. It may be necessary to increase the doses
up to 2 – 400 mg daily. On medical prescription only.
Care must be taken to the use of cimetidine during pregnancy and lactation, since the safety is not established yet.
It is not recommended to use cimetidine in children under 16 years. In such a case, the dosage
used is 20 – 40 mg/kg body weight daily.

Dermatology : skin rash.
Hematology : neutropenia, agranulocytosis, thrombocytopenia.
Gastrointestinal : mild diarrhoea.
Gynaecomastia may occur.
Reversible impotence has been reported in patients with pathological hypersecretory disorders treated for at least 12 months
with high doses of cimetidine.
Reversible confusion states have been reported predominantly in severely ill patients, advanced age and will disappear 48
hours after the discontinuation of treatment.
Cimetidine reduces the hepatic metabolism of warfarin – type anticoagulants, phenytoin, lidocaine and theophylline, thereby
delaying elimination and increasing blood levels of these drugs.
