New Hope for Premature Babies: PT Ethica Industri Farmasi Launches Caffeine Citrate Injection, Addresses Respiratory Problems in Premature Infants.
Jakarta, March 13, 2025 – PT Ethica Industri Farmasi, a subsidiary of PT Pyridam Farma Tbk (PYFAGROUP), proudly announces the launch of its latest product containing Caffeine Citrate, an injection drug developed to treat primary apnea in premature infants.
Caffeine Citrate Injection is a crucial treatment for preterm infants who experience apnea because their brain’s respiratory control system is not fully developed and the muscles that maintain the airway do not function optimally. This drug works by stimulating the respiratory center, increasing the amount of air per minute during air exchange in the lungs, and increasing oxygen consumption, thereby providing a therapeutic effect on apnea in premature infants.
According to the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, at the inauguration of the Mother and Child Health Service Building at RSUP Ngoerah in Denpasar in September 2024, “In Indonesia, the most common cause of death is premature birth.”
Budi also stated that every year, 78,000 babies die in Indonesia out of 4.6 million births. Furthermore, based on basic health research (2018), the prevalence of premature births in Indonesia in 2018 was 29.5 percent per 1,000 live births, and Indonesia ranks 5th highest globally for premature births, with approximately 657,700 cases.
“The high mortality rate of premature babies is a concern and drives us to continue innovating and providing quality products like Caffeine Citrate injection, which can help improve survival chances for premature infants. We hope that with this product, the mortality rate of premature babies can be reduced and save Indonesia’s golden generation,” said Yuning Istiyani, Marketing Access Manager at PT Ethica Industri Farmasi.
Caffeine Citrate has received recommendations from the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) and strong recommendations from WHO, as evidenced in the children’s health service pocketbook at primary hospitals in districts/cities. It is important to note that the use of Caffeine Citrate Injection can only be performed by medical personnel/experts in hospitals.
As additional information, Caffeine Citrate injection is now widely available in several hospitals across Indonesia, including in Java, Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bali, Kalimantan, and others. Caffeine Citrate injection is also included in the list of drugs covered by BPJS insurance, making it easier for the public to obtain this medication.
