Description
COMPOSITION :
Each Capsule contains Chloramphenicol 250 mg
PHARMACOLOGY :
Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic effective against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as some
microorganism eg. Rickettsia and Mycoplasma.
INDICATIONS :
Drug of choice for the treatment of typhoid and paratyphoid fever.
Other severe infections caused by salmonella sp, Haemoplulus influenza (especially meningeal infection), Rickettsia,
Lymphogranuloma, Psittacosis and gram-negative microorganism which cause bacterial meningitis.
CONTRAINDICATIONS :
Patients with known hypersensitivity to chloramphenicol
Patients with severe liver and impairment
ADVERSE REACTIONS :
Chloramphenicol may cause blood dyscrasia, especially aplastic anemia which could become serious and fatal.
Other hypersensitive reactions eg. Anaphylactic reactions and urticaria have been reported.
Chloramphenical may cause gray syndrome in newborn babies, especially premature babies.
Chloramphenicol may also cause gastrointestinal disorders, eg. Vomiting, diarrhea or nausea.
PRECAUTIONS :
Chloramphenicol is indicated only to known bacteria and severe infections.
It is suggested to have a periodic blood count check if Chloramphenicol is being used for long period of treatment and
control is necessary to avoid the possibility of superinfections with bacteria and fungi.
Safety when given to pregnant women and lactating mothers has not been established.
Do not use as prophylactic purposed.
Do not use for the treatment of influenza, cough or throat infections.
Caution should be exercised when given to patients with renal insufficiency, to premature and newborn babies ( 2
weeks).
DOSAGE :
Adults : 1~2 capsules four times daily
Children : 30~50 mg/body weight daily in devided dose
